Troponin T (cTnT-Muscle panel)

Biological or Clinical Significance:

Troponin T is a part of the troponin complex. It binds to tropomyosin, interlocking them to form a troponin-tropomyosin complex. Troponin T binds to tropomyosin and helps position it on actin, and with the rest of the troponin complex modulates contraction of striated muscle.
In patients with stable coronary artery disease, troponin T concentrations have long been found to be significantly associated with the incidence of cardiovascular death and heart failure, but it was 2014 before it began to be accepted in predicting who would later suffer acute myocardial infarction (heart attack).
