BioAgilytix Team Q&A: Meet Dominic Phan, Business Development Associate at BioAgilytix

BioAgilytix Team Q&A: Meet Dominic Phan, Business Development Associate at BioAgilytix

Bringing quality employees into a company is a significant part of ensuring the entire organization’s health and longevity. At BioAgilytix, we want to see each member of our team be successful and evolve in his or her role. To get a better understanding of our employees’ day-to-day experiences at BioAgilytix, and how they have been able to grow in their career here, we’ve been interviewing members of our Scientific, Quality Assurance (QA), Quality Control (QC), and Business Development teams so they can share their stories.

In this Q&A session, we speak to Dominic Phan, Business Development Associate at BioAgilytix, to discuss his experience joining the company as a new graduate two years ago and how his role has evolved since then.

Tell us a little about your background, what made you want to work in this industry?
I have a lot of family in the medical industry, so when I started college at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, CA, I decided to go in as a pre-med student. While I was in college I also started several entrepreneurial ventures in the realm of fashion, and realized that I had a real passion for business too. That was ultimately what made me switch my major to Marketing in my junior year. It was a little scary to make such a big change so far into school, but it worked out because it led me to where I am today. My aunt was actually working for BioAgilytix right around that time, and was getting ready to move to their headquarters location in North Carolina. She asked me over to help her pack and said she wanted to introduce me to her good friend Dominique Gouty, who also happened to be BioAgilytix’s Senior Vice President of Business Operations. I jumped at the chance to meet and talk with her and she really opened my eyes to the industry opportunities available in the pharma and biotech field. I had always thought my only route would be to go into something like pharmaceutical sales, but I realized that working at a CRO like BioAgilytix would allow me to combine both my medical and business education and interests.

Shortly after our initial introduction, Domi helped me to get an internship at BioAgilytix during the summer of 2015, and after that experience, I was offered a full-time role when I graduated.

How was your experience coming to work at BioAgilytix as a new graduate?
It was intimidating because everyone here is a pro. My level of experience and bioanalytical knowledge was obviously nowhere near the majority of my colleagues, but I remember my first mentor Daniel Cohen saying to me in the very beginning, “Don’t worry about what you don’t know right now; just work hard.” So that is what I did. I started out doing calls to set up initial teleconferences between prospects and our scientific team. That can be a hard role to stay motivated in but I was really focused on pulling my own weight to help the team, and in return they went out of their way to help me. Everyone was a mentor, and everyone gave me the space to learn and be creative; they showed me the way things were done, but also encouraged me to explore ways to do them better if I had ideas I felt could work.

Tell us about your current role. How has it evolved since you joined BioAgilytix?
While I started out cold calling, I’ve always had a clear goal to ultimately become a Business Development Manager, and BioAgilytix has given me increasing responsibilities over time to help set me up for success in a role like that. Eventually instead of just scheduling the calls, I was asked to join them, and then to even participate and present on them. I also had opportunities to travel with BD team members and our Global CSO, Afshin Safavi, to visit customers and prospects. I’ve had incredible mentors along the way. Right now I work very closely with Mike Losauro, our BD Director who is based in San Diego, and he has been a huge help providing me guidance as my role has evolved. Today, as a Business Development Associate, I focus on targeting new clients in our territory, coming up with different ideas and strategies to penetrate new companies and let them know about the opportunities to work with BioAgilytix; in fact, I just recently signed my first contract with a client!

What type of professional development opportunities have been made available to you?
A lot of what I have learned in the last two years has come by way of mentorship. I have had the amazing opportunity to learn about a lot of different aspects of the business from members of the larger team – both from BD and leadership team members like Afshin and Domi. BioAgilytix also sponsored me to attend a Miller Heiman sales training course, which was a great experience. In many ways the culture here feels more entrepreneurial than traditional corporate, in that you are not relegated to a narrow role but given the space and support you need to grow, as long as you show a commitment and drive to keep learning and to keep thinking of ways to improve.

How are you able to see the impact of the work you do on a larger scale?
So far in 2018, there have been nine large molecule drugs approved by the FDA, and BioAgilytix has worked on five of them. That is huge; it is so exciting to be a part of an organization that is making such a significant impact on the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries and on patients in need.

What is your favorite part about working at BioAgilytix?
I love that they let me be myself. I’m one of the youngest members of the team, and my background is different from everyone else, but here they embrace everyone’s differences and find the best way to utilize your unique talents. It’s a very nurturing environment; it really feels that everyone has your back and is looking out for your best interests. We push each other, but in the name of friendly competition, and if you make mistakes, they make sure you learn and grow from them. As a company, we’ve grown so much in the past two years, but it has really been a team effort. No one single person takes credit, and it feels good to know that I’ve helped in my own way to contribute to that success.
