BioAgilytix Team Q&A: Meet Matthew Hoyle, Associate Director, Global Marketing at BioAgilytix

BioAgilytix Team Q&A: Meet Matthew Hoyle, Associate Director, Global Marketing at BioAgilytix

What makes BioAgilytix an exciting place to work? We talk to Matthew Hoyle, our Associate Director, Global Marketing at BioAgilytix – whom is a BioAgilytix returning employee after spending 4 years in different business – to find out what drove him back to the company, and what programs he is spearheading now to make the worldwide pharma and biotech industry aware of the premier large molecule expertise available to them through BioAgilytix.

Tell us a little about your background. What made you want to work in the pharma/biotech industry?
After high school I was recruited to Duke University as a decathlete and an aspiring pre-med student. But, after a couple fascinating psychology courses, I realized that I needed to change my focus. By sophomore year I began to put all of my efforts into developing myself into a marketing professional. I chose to major in psychology, and quickly found my niche within the social psychology sub-focus. I concentrated my coursework on consumer behavior, behavioral economics, and the psychology behind marketing and business. I also interned with the Digital Analytics group at Crispin Porter + Bogusky, which really opened my eyes to the power of digital marketing. After graduation, I was actually looking for a marketing position in the technology industry but was connected to BioAgilytix through a family friend who worked there.

I had my eye on a Marketing Associate role they had open, but during my interview was convinced that starting in an entry level sales role would give me the best exposure to the bioanalytical industry and drug development landscape, as I would have to immerse myself in the language and needs of the pharma and biotech market. In hindsight, I can see that it really enabled me to become acclimated with the field and helped me accelerate my career in the long-term.

What has your career path at BioAgilytix been like since initially joining the team?
I started with BioAgilytix in 2011 as a Business Development Associate, where my role largely involved B2B inside sales. This gave me significant experience as a prospector, lead generator, and CRM administrator, but more than anything, I came out with a deep understanding of our industry from daily direct sales. After about 10 months, I did end up transitioning into a Commercial Marketing role, and progressed quite a bit from there to eventually become Marketing Manager in 2014. During that time, I had the opportunity to work on a variety of exciting projects including a website overhaul, scientific collateral, advertising, social media, tradeshows & events, and email marketing, and my efforts were focused on moving BioAgilytix beyond their standard marketing practices into the digital age. In a “Google-first” world, it was important for me to focus on SEO and AdWords to bring visibility to BioAgilytix’s best-in-class team and bioanalytical services. I also prioritized increasing our cadence and diversity of content, social media, and digital advertising to become easily accessible to our client base.

In mid-2015, I decided to make a change and left BioAgilytix to take a Marketing position at an advertising technology company. I felt this would be a good move for my career and it gave me the opportunity to work in and learn strategies from an established and seasoned company that aligned with my technology interests. From there I moved to a start-up company offering nurse and healthcare staff scheduling software. This was another great experience for me as I was able to help them build their marketing practice from the ground up. When I reconnected with Jim Datin, BioAgilytix’s CEO, this year, he was looking for additional marketing support and I had all of this diverse experience in hand. It felt like the perfect time and opportunity to come back on board. I interviewed and officially joined as Associate Director, Global Marketing in September.

What drove you to return to BioAgilytix?
Hearing from Jim about the growth environment at BioAgilytix got me really excited; I was also impressed with the number of people that have remained with the company since my initial time there, even through its tremendous growth. We were a 60-person team when I left, and have 375+ team members now, but they have maintained the same collaborative and entrepreneurial environment that I enjoy. I also felt that I could bring a fresh perspective from my experiences at companies in other industries and apply important learnings to help take BioAgilytix’s marketing and brand to the next level within the pharma and biotech space.

What opportunities do you see coming for BioAgilytix in the industry and from a marketing perspective?
The industry has some potentially revolutionary drug modalities emerging in gene, cell, and oncolytic virus therapies. Within these emergent opportunities, drug development and approvals are gaining momentum and solving problems that were unattainable through traditional pharmaceuticals like small molecule drugs. Clients come to BioAgilytix with their most difficult bioanalytical problems and we have proactively built capabilities and expertise to support their needs with cutting-edge technologies. Each project requires a special expertise and a different solution that we can provide to our clients.

This presents me with a great opportunity in marketing to create and share scientific content and thought leadership for BioAgilytix. I work closely with our scientific team to produce educational content in the form of blogs, white papers, posters, presentation, etc. We hope that the content we create and the services we provide will help push the industry forward and ultimately solve patient problems that were previously thought of as uncurable. It is an honor to work on initiatives that will touch so many lives.

How would you describe BioAgilytix’s company culture?
I think “work hard, play hard” is an over-used phrase, but it genuinely applies to the mentality of the entire BioAgilytix team. There are a lot of smart, hardworking people that are really driven, and push you to excel and be better every day. There is an atmosphere of healthy competition but it is grounded in the fact that everyone, including our senior-level executive team, is there to support you and help you succeed. I value how this environment pushes me and others to raise our standards and self-improve.

It’s also nice that we’re not all just professional colleagues, but friends as well. The company hosts many events and moments to get together, like our “First Thursdays” every month, which gives us a chance to get to know one another in a more relaxed setting and on a more personal level.

What is your favorite thing, personally, about working at BioAgilytix?
Working at BioAgilytix is a fun challenge. When I left the company to pursue positions in the tech industry, I had this notion that I would enjoy it more since I have a natural inclination for technology – but I discovered that wasn’t necessarily the case. I had no biotech background when I started here, and I had to collaborate closely with our scientific staff, and still do, which is actually a great thing. It is demanding but I really enjoy the challenge and getting to continually learn more about the exciting work our scientists are doing to change patient health outcomes.
