BioAgilytix Team Q&A: Meet Stuart Logan, Business Development Manager at BioAgilytix Europe

BioAgilytix Team Q&A: Meet Stuart Logan, Business Development Manager at BioAgilytix Europe

Passion for the work we do is part of life at BioAgilytix. Excitement about innovative science permeates the entire company from the C-suite to laboratory scientists and support staff, so it is essential for us to bring on new employees who are eager to grow and learn in their new roles.

In this Q&A session, Stuart Logan, Business Development Manager at BioAgilytix Europe, discusses the benefits of working with an expert team with an open-door policy and shares how his colleagues have contributed to his professional development since joining BioAgilytix Europe earlier this year.

Tell us about your background and what brought you to BioAgilytix Europe.
After graduating from the University of Glasgow with a degree in Medical Biochemistry, I quickly realized that my passion lies in meeting new people and helping scientists address challenges in their exciting research projects. This led to my career working as a technical salesperson, selling scientific equipment for life science research and early stage drug discovery.

For the past 10 years I’ve enjoyed working for global Life Science organizations like PerkinElmer, and smaller, innovative companies like Essen Bioscience and IntelliCyt. Initially I specialized in microscopy and live-cell imaging technologies, where I not only sold the equipment but also performed system installations and offered training and technical support to our customers too. As I progressed, my responsibilities increased and soon I was covering not only the UK, but also Ireland, Scandinavia, and the Netherlands as well.

After 10 years in instrument sales I was ready for a new challenge and that is when I noticed the posting for the role as BD Manager for BioAgilytix Europe. Having worked in both large organizations and smaller, fast-growing companies, I realized that my strengths were better suited to the latter, where you have the freedom to get involved in multiple areas of the business and the potential to make a greater impact. Straight away I could see that BioAgilytix was a perfect fit. They have an exceptional reputation for quality, a highly experienced scientific team, and operate in an area that I find really exciting – supporting novel drug development projects in a time when there are so many amazing treatment breakthroughs.

The interview process was a great experience. I was able to spend a good deal of time speaking to the senior executive team and the scientific leaders of the company. I could tell that the entire team was passionate and valued a collaborative environment, and that BioAgilytix Europe would be a place where I could develop professionally.

Tell us about your current role.
As a Business Development Manager, I am responsible for supporting existing clients, raising awareness of BioAgilytix Europe to new customers, and developing relationships with biotech and pharma companies in the UK, Ireland, Scandinavia, and the Netherlands. For me, the transition from instrument sales to selling CRO services was daunting but exciting. Understanding everything from the intricacies of our service offerings, to how they apply throughout the clinical trial process, to all the regulatory considerations along the way, definitely presented a steep learning curve. Luckily, everyone here has been very supportive and happy to share their knowledge to help me ramp up quickly.

How has BioAgilytix Europe supported you in your role?
BioAgilytix Europe has cultivated an environment in which learning and open communication are prioritized and I regularly speak with the most experienced members of our executive, scientific, and business development teams – both in Hamburg and in the US. Communication between the different departments has been key to growing my understanding of the overall operations of the business.

The company has also provided valuable educational resources like the BioAgilytix University – a live seminar series hosted by our senior scientific team – which helps to train new employees on what services we offer and the more complex scientific and regulatory topics. Although I don’t get deeply involved scientifically in each client project, the course gave me an appreciation of the challenges and considerations involved in setting up these complex assays, be it for PK, immunogenicity, or biomarker projects. Of course, it’s impossible to become an expert overnight, so I am still learning, but I have a highly experienced, passionate, and dedicated team encouraging me and supporting me.

What opportunities do you see for BioAgilytix Europe in the industry?
The importance and success of biological therapeutics continues to grow and impact almost all disease areas. As more of these drugs progress through development, the demand for BioAgilytix’s services and expertise will continue to grow. We have a proven track record of success, a great reputation for quality, and unrivaled expertise in this area, and that expertise and understanding is what companies will need to give their drug candidates the best chance of success.

What do you think sets BioAgilytix apart from other CROs in the industry?
Large molecule drug development is still fairly new and the regulations around testing safety and efficacy continue to evolve. As a specialist CRO, we don’t have a complex bureaucratic hierarchy. That means that ALL of our clients get the opportunity to speak directly with our senior executive team – which includes leading experts like Arno Kromminga, Afshin Safavi, and Dominique Gouty. That doesn’t happen at every CRO and it is significant because these people are routinely in contact with the FDA and EMA, discussing regulatory considerations and they can also see and avoid potential pitfalls in each project before they happen, which is truly invaluable.

What is your favorite thing about working at BioAgilytix Europe?
I would also say the fact that every person at BioAgilytix, from the newest recruit in the lab through to our CEO, Jim Datin, are extremely passionate about what we do. The focus is not only on our company’s success, but more importantly on producing quality science that has a direct impact on patient health and wellbeing. I also appreciate that the current leaders and experts of the company are genuinely committed to passing on knowledge to the new employees like me and that they appreciate the necessity and value of this. It is truly unique to see so much emphasis being placed on your development as an employee. I have really enjoyed my first six months with BioAgilytix Europe. I am looking forward to the next challenges and being a part of this company for a long time.
